City of Masvingo has secured the Bloomberg Philanthropies Youth Climate Action Fund, placing the city among progressive urban centres globally taking decisive action against climate change.

In a public notice, the local authority described the development as a significant opportunity for young people to drive environmental sustainability initiatives within the city.

“This fund is not just a financial award, but a powerful opportunity for our community, especially the youth, to take a leading role in environmental stewardship,” the notice reads in part.

The city says young people in Masvingo will spearhead projects focusing on waste management, tree planting, renewable energy use, and environmental awareness campaigns aimed at promoting a cleaner and greener city.

The programme is expected to bring several benefits, including improved environmental protection, cleaner surroundings, and increased youth participation in community development projects.

The city also said the initiative would help create productive opportunities for young people while positioning Masvingo as a leader in climate action both in Zimbabwe and internationally.

“The project will also contribute towards the protection of Masvingo’s 19 gazetted wetlands, which remain critical to environmental sustainability and water conservation,” reads part of the statement.

Residents have been urged to actively support and participate in the climate initiatives to ensure the success of the programme.

“Together, we can build a greener, cleaner and more sustainable Masvingo for current and future generations.

Let us all take pride in this achievement and work collectively to make the most of this opportunity. Masvingo is rising let’s go green together,” the city said.
