Bikita Minerals commemorated International Workers’ Day with a strong call for enhanced workplace safety, increased productivity and deeper worker empowerment during celebrations held at Lithium Stadium on May 1.
The event brought together employees, management, government officials and community leaders under the theme “Empowering Workers; Empowering Voices,” highlighting a shared commitment to improving labour conditions while strengthening operational performance.
Officials from the Ministry of Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare reaffirmed government support for pro-worker policies.
“We reaffirm government’s commitment to strengthening worker rights, ensuring fair wages, and promoting safe and dignified working conditions across all sectors. Bikita Minerals’ efforts reflect alignment with our national development goals,” a ministry representative said.
Mine Manager Experience Kagodi emphasized that safety remains the company’s top priority, underscoring a zero-tolerance approach to workplace incidents.
“Zero harm is non-negotiable. We have invested significantly in protective equipment, training, and emergency response systems, but safety ultimately depends on every worker remaining vigilant and proactive,” Kagodi said.
He added that worker welfare and productivity are closely linked.
“Our progress in production is directly linked to the well-being and commitment of our workforce. When workers are safe and empowered, productivity follows,” said Kagodi.
Management noted that the mine was scaling up operations to meet growing global demand for lithium, stressing that collaboration between workers and leadership was key to sustaining output.
Labour representatives and union leaders also used the platform to reinforce commitments to constructive engagement, pledging to resolve disputes through dialogue. They commended the company for respecting collective bargaining agreements and fostering cooperation among stakeholders.
The commemorations featured a range of activities including football, netball, tug-of-war, darts, snooker, a marathon and a walkathon, aimed at promoting teamwork and employee wellness.
Human Resources Manager Hilton Chimura highlighted the broader value of employees beyond production.
“Today we celebrate not just what our workers produce, but who they are—fathers, mothers, neighbours, and leaders in their communities,” Chimura said.
He emphasized the importance of worker inclusion in the company’s future.
“Empowering workers’ voices and safeguarding their welfare is essential to building a resilient, productive, and sustainable mining operation,” said Chimura.
The event concluded with a renewed commitment from management, labour and government to uphold worker dignity, safety and empowerment within Zimbabwe’s mining sector.
