The City of Masvingo has allocated US$270 000 for the purchase of three refuse compactors under its approved US$31.9 million 2026 budget.
The allocation is aimed at strengthening waste collection capacity and improving sanitation standards across the city.
The funding was detailed during a post-budget breakfast meeting that brought together business leaders, industry representatives, and policymakers to discuss key fiscal measures and economic strategies for the coming year.
Town Clerk Eng. Edward Mukaratirwa confirmed that the procurement is intended to stabilise refuse collection services, particularly as the city prepares to host major national events.
“In the 2026 financial plan, we have set aside funds to purchase three refuse compactors to ensure the city remains clean, especially as we prepare to host major national events,” he said.
The investment responds to mounting pressure on the council from an ageing refuse collection fleet, rising operational costs, and increasing waste volumes resulting from urban expansion.
The new compactors are expected to improve collection turnaround times, reduce illegal dumping, and strengthen public health safeguards.
The city is also preparing to relocate its current dumpsite in line with environmental compliance standards enforced by the Environmental Management Agency.
According to Mukaratirwa, the arrival of the new equipment will facilitate the transition.
“We are working on relocating the current dumpsite to the new landfill site as soon as the required equipment arrives.
“As of now, we are still waiting for the proper equipment, which is expected to be delivered by the end of March. Once it has been delivered, the relocation process will commence,” he said.
Anoziva Muguti, director of the Masvingo United Residents and Ratepayers Association (MURRA), said the approved budget reflects extensive community input.
“Residents are happy with the approved budget. The consultations were done properly, and everyone had a chance to provide input.
“On the issue of refuse compactors, the council made a good move, as it will expedite the relocation from the dumpsite to the new engineered landfill,” said Muguti.
Masvingo is scheduled to host the 2026 Sanganai/Hlanganani Tourism Expo, organised by the Zimbabwe Tourism Authority, along with other national gatherings—placing additional emphasis on efficient service delivery.
The refuse fleet upgrade forms part of broader infrastructure interventions within the 2026 fiscal framework, positioning the city to address growing service delivery demands while maintaining urban cleanliness standards.
