The Lowveld Volleyball Association (LVA) has joined the fight against drug abuse by organising an open volleyball tournament scheduled September 21, 2024 at Chiredzi Christian College.

Organisers say the event was aimed at bringing together volleyball enthusiasts and members of the community to raise awareness about the dangers of drug abuse and promote healthier lifestyles.

Such cheap yet dangerous drugs as chrystal meth (mutoriro/dombo) are causing severe social and health problems in the whole country.

LVA Chairman Lawrence Macharaga said they were working to inspire positive change and encourage youths to become better people.

“The tournament is about creating a platform for people to gather and listen to the bitter side of substance and drug abuse. We are finding speakers who will share with us words of advice. Every discipline in sport is losing talent to drugs, and it is our hope to bring back the lost sheep through this engagement,” said Macharaga.

He said the association was building an affiliation of teams to make sure the initiative would not become a one-day event, but a lasting programme.

“We intend to hold more tournaments with the money which will be raised. We want this to continue into the future,” Macharaga said.

Tsitsi Choga, a social worker at Emson Foundation applauded LVA for their efforts, saying the fight against drug abuse needed the participation of all people.
