A coalition of Non-Governmental Organizations—the Zimbabwe Smallholder Organic Farmers Forum (ZimSOFF), Batanai HIV and AIDS Service Organisation (BHASO), and Socio-Economic Action Transformation for Humanity (SEATH)—recently partnered to host a series of football matches for youths in Summerton, Ward 6, Chidzikwe area of Masvingo rural.
The games, organized as part of a broader initiative promoting social cohesion, health, and youth development, drew scores of young participants and local community members. Organizers emphasized that these events transcend sport, strategically serving as platforms for wider community development.
SEATH founding director Tendai Mafuka said their collaboration aims to support vulnerable groups, particularly young people and women.
“We are here to recognize and nurture talent while providing mentorship and exposure opportunities for youths. In the coming days, we will also introduce life-sustaining projects like community gardens to further empower them,” said Mafuka.
The event also created space for vital support services. BHASO conducted counselling and awareness programs focused on HIV and AIDS, reproductive health and sex education.
While fostering entertainment and interaction, the football matches enabled NGOs to address deeper social issues. They facilitated youth engagement, built mutual trust within the community and promoted mental well-being.
This initiative reflects a growing trend among NGOs using sports as a tool for holistic development. ZIMSOFF, for instance, combines sports-based programs with other grassroots efforts to support marginalized communities, including refugees, across Masvingo province.
Through inter-organizational collaboration, the participating NGOs strengthened development sector partnerships, ensuring these programmes reached communities most in need.
