Chiredzi Town Council has purchased a new 20 cubic Howo Tipper truck which is set for use in waste management and road maintenance services.
During previous budget consultative meetings organised by the local authority, residents had requested for such a vehicle to minimise hiring costs.
Chiredzi Town Council chairperson Jameson Charumbira said the tipper was going to make a significant contribution to the improvement of waste management in the town.
“This marks the first time we have owned a tipper truck, and it demonstrates our commitment to respond to residents’ requests and work together to improve services in our town,” said Charumbira.
The Council has faced challenges in maintaining roads as it had to hire tippers for use in patching potholes and gravelling damaged roads.
The Chiredzi Pioneers, a grouping of longtime residents, said council should work to have a complete fleet of its own.
“We have always spoken on the importance of procuring our own fleet in order to put an end to hiring. We therefore welcome this development as a first step towards a fully self-reliant local authority,” said Desmond Chinounda, a representative of the grouping.
He urged the council to redirect the money that would henceforth be saved towards other pressing issues like sanitation.
