EMA steps up environmental awareness campaign in Masvingo

The Environmental Management Agency (EMA) has stepped up its environmental awareness campaign in Masvingo province as part of a nationwide effort to promote the sustainable use of natural resources.

Sustainable use of natural resources means using natural resources in a way that meets current needs without depleting them or harming the environment, so they remain available for future generations.

The two-week drive includes training Environmental Sub-Committees (ESCs), engaging small-scale miners, and working with local authorities, traditional leaders and community groups.

ESCs, which operate at ward level, are responsible for monitoring and reporting on sustainability and environmental issues within their communities.

Provincial Environmental Education and Publicity Officer, Munyaradzi Mtisi, said ten ESCs have been trained so far, with more expected to be capacitated as the campaign continues.

“We are currently conducting a national exercise to raise awareness on the sustainable use of natural resources. This includes capacity building for Environmental Sub-Committees, Community-Based Organizations, recyclers, and engagements with miners, industries, and local authorities,” Mtisi said.

He added that the campaign is part of EMA’s wider strategy to strengthen environmental governance and ensure communities actively participate in safeguarding ecosystems and promoting responsible resource use.

Traditional leaders and local governance structures have been identified as crucial partners in the campaign, given their influence in mobilizing communities and enforcing environmentally sound practices.

The awareness initiative, which is being rolled out in all provinces, seeks to build an informed citizenry committed to environmental stewardship and sustainable development.
