Bikita Rural District Council (RDC) has rolled out a USD140 000 waste management project aimed at transforming Nyika growth point into a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable centre.
The initiative includes an industrial-grade refuse compactor and strategically placed skip bins at high-traffic areas such as the bus terminus.
The move is expected to improve waste collection efficiency, reduce pollution, and promote civic pride among residents and businesses.
Acting Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Engineer Arnold Mtuke said the council is determined to make Bikita a model for environmental responsibility.
“Modern waste management is not just about infrastructure — it’s about building a culture of responsibility and pride in our community.
“By engaging households and businesses, we aim to make clean and sustainable living a way of life in Bikita,” said Mtuke.
He said the project will enhance sanitation, reduce the risk of disease, and improve the growth point’s appearance, creating a more attractive environment for investors.
“This investment marks a transformative milestone for Bikita. It demonstrates our commitment to turning the growth point into a modern, clean, and economically vibrant hub,” said Mtuke.
The project supports several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including sustainable cities and communities (SDG 11), responsible consumption and production (SDG 12), climate action (SDG 13), and good health and well-being (SDG 3).
It also aligns with Africa’s Agenda 2063, which promotes inclusive growth and modern infrastructure, as well as Zimbabwe’s Vision 2030, which seeks to modernise rural growth points and enhance environmental sustainability.
