Bikita Minerals has expanded its school nutrition programme in Bikita District, distributing more than 14 000 kilogrammes of Maheu to 16 primary schools for the first term of 2026, as the initiative moves closer to supporting 10 000 learners.
The programme, which was launched in 2022, has grown from an initial reach of about 5 000 pupils. It is designed to complement the government’s school feeding scheme by providing additional nutritional support to primary school learners.
“This term saw the inclusion of Chikukutu and Dungu Primary Schools, extending the programme’s footprint within the district and bringing nutritional assistance to more families,” the company said in a press statement.
School authorities say the programme has contributed to improved learner attendance, increased daily energy levels, and support for children from vulnerable households.
Minister of Primary and Secondary Education, Torerayi Moyo, acknowledged Bikita Minerals’ involvement in school feeding initiatives and encouraged other stakeholders to participate.
“We are very pleased to see how Bikita Minerals is answering the call from the ministry to help in feeding school children.
“Children come from different backgrounds and some even come to school without eating anything hence school feeding programmes are very critical.
“We would like to see more players coming in to work with the ministry in this programme,” said Moyo.
Ward 12 councillor Brighton Mushekwi said the inclusion of two schools from his ward was significant and called on the mining company to consider expanding the programme further.
“I am delighted that two schools from my ward have been included into the programme. We hope the expansion continues so that more schools benefit because we see the impact it has on those already in the programme,” said Mushekwi.
Teachers at participating schools said the programme has been consistently implemented and has contributed to learner welfare.
Bikita Minerals said it will continue implementing the programme and is exploring ways to strengthen it in future terms.
